The gates were open at 10 am;
I was there at 10 oh one.
I didn’t want to miss a minute
Of the excitement and fun.
It was the first State Fair
That I had ever been to
And I didn’t know what to expect.
Every thing for me would be new.
I didn’t have to pay;
There was no charge for me.
It was Dallas Day at the Fair
And I got in free.
So many things to see,
So many things to do.
I wanted to see everything
And visit the petting zoo.
The Midway, of course was first.
And my 1st roller coaster ride.
(Also my last I must say
For I really thought I had died.)
Strolling through the buildings
Was quite an experience for me.
Especially the one with food
Where all the samples were free.
The crowds, the noise, the music
Were all part of that day
And after dark it was even better
The grime of the day all washed away.
Bright lights, fireworks and parades
Brightened up the night.
For this small town boy
All this was quite a sight.
It’s now 50 years later
And I still enjoy the fair.
I don’t go every year
But usually you’ll find me there.
