I HEARD A SONG
I HEARD A SONG
I heard a song the other day
On a children's TV show.
Four words! That's all it took
To send me back sixty years or so.
The last song was sung,
The fire was almost out.
The boys and girls went to tents
With a "Goodnight" shout.
I didn't know that what we did
Would get the girl in trouble.
And before the night was over
It would be trouble double.
It was She and it was I
Who left the camp that night.
With us came Him and Her,
To walk until out of sight.
We sat, the four of us,
On a hilltop near a lake.
We talked and laughed,
And had childish plans to make.
The moon was up, the stars were out.
It was for us a glorious night.
But then, at the bottom of the hill,
We saw a multitude of lights.
We didn't have to wonder long
About what was going on.
For in no time at all
We were found by Counselor John.
Oh, he had words to say
About the search for us.
But this was a Church Camp
So he really couldn't cuss.
I no longer remember Him or Her
And have also forgotten She.
But I don't think I'll ever forget
This first time with a girl close to me.
Oh, yes. The song that I heard
On the children's show?
John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith!
Was what I first heard years ago.
