Its November 28, 1995;
We had our first snowfall today.
it lasted just a few minutes
And then went away.
It was exciting to see the flakes
Falling like leaves from the sky.
But I was just as happy when
Once again it was dry.
I used to think snow was great
When drifts were highly piled.
But that was years and years ago,
Back when I was just a child.
My, the things we used to do
In that blanket of white.
After the snowman was made
Came the snowball fight.
Fox and geese and snow angels;
These games and sledding too.
Snow forts were all over town
Before winter was through.
But now as I watch it fall
And cover the ground with white
I think of how my father cussed
The morning after a snowy night.
I didn’t realize at the time
(Because I was young, you see)
That when I also had to work
It would no longer be fun for me.
Forty winters it was, or just about
I suffered through the cold.
Waiting for a bus in the ice and snow,
I tell you this got pretty old.
(To tell the truth I should say
That summers weren’t any better.
But one thing sure was that
I didn’t have to wear a sweater.)
Now I watch the snow flakes
And think it’s pretty poor.
That on this very day I must
Go to the grocery store.
