NOW ITS OCTOBER
Another month has passed.
The year is now nine months through.
Just think! Only three more months
And the year will again be new.
Calendars are already coming
From people who want donations.
A free gift for you they say,
But we need your consideration.
Christmas catalogs, and order forms
Arrive in almost every mail.
Whatever one would want,
It’s probably for sale.
Halloween will be here soon.
Then all the kids will come
To holler ‘trick or treat’
And collect their bubble gum.
It’s fun to see these little ones,
Some only three or four,
All dressed in a costume
As they come to the door.
Brown, black and white
It makes no difference at all
In Spanish, or English,
It’s “trick or treat, ya’ll.
I remember when I was a kid
You had to be six or more
Before going trick or treating
From door to door.
But on the night before
We went from place to place
Throwing corn on the porch;
Then away we would race.
Corn Night was lots of fun.
We kids were scared as the dickens;
But never even realized
That we were feeding the chickens.
Calendars and Christmas catalogs
Are harbingers of fall
But memories of Octobers past
Are really best of all.
