My New Cane

I remember very well
The first cane I carried.
It was in a high school play;
I played a man who was married.

It looked like a normal cane
Except the top came off.
And there was a little bottle
To carry something for a cough.

I guess the next cane I used
Was when I had a sprain.
I used it even after
I was without any pain.

But one day a regular on the bus
Saw me limping as if very sore
And said so all could hear
“You don’t need a cane any more.”

She was right, of course,
But spoiled all my fun.
I had really enjoyed the time
Of being such a pitiful one.

My umbrella has been my cane
In the winter or on a cloudy day.
If there is ice upon the walk
This cane helps my feet to stay.

It is also fun to walk along
Twirling it round and round
Or balancing it on my finger tip
Until it falls to the ground.

But now I have a brand new cane
One that I think is pretty neat.
I bought it just the other day.
Would you believe it has a seat!

Now I don’t have to stand
When waiting for a bus.
I can sit on my cane and rest.
No fuss; no muss!
