. MY DADDY WAS A HERO

MY DADDY WAS A HERO

My daddy was a hero
For he marched off to fight.
In the war to end all wars
He helped to make things right.

There was his picture on the wall
With his buddies in their army clothes.
I could just hear him saying
"We'll get those so and sos".

His gas mask was laid away
In a cellar place.
But he would always let me
Put it on my face.

Then I marched around the yard
As daddy must have done
With stick upon my shoulder
(I didn't have daddy's gun).

Those nasty Huns were the ones
At whom I fired to kill.
And if I could have found him
I would have shot Kaiser Bill.

Then I would have been a hero
Just like my daddy was.
And when I was asked why I did it
I would say "just because".

'Cause they were bad and we were good
Was the reason why.
And just like my daddy did
I had to shoot or die.

One day I asked my daddy
"Please tell me about the war
And what you did
To even up the score".

"Well, son, there's not much to tell
It was rather dull, I guess.
For all I did in the army
Was run a printing press."

My daddy was a hero
But in a different way.
Even though he didn't fire a shot
He helped to save the day.
