THE COUPLE AND THE DOG ![]()
It was on old highway U.S. 66 On a pretty summer day When I raised my thumb up high To ask "Going my way?" The cars passed so very fast But none of them would stop. Yet I kept hoping that soon Into one I would hop. Then passed the car I remember well. The couple, oh so very young, Who waved and smiled at me. And the dog who out the window hung. Even though I was bored and tired These two cheered me up. They were such a happy pair With their little pup. Well, it was not long after that I was on the road again. I finally heard the blessed words "Come on, kid. Get in!" Not much later I heard the words That spoils a person's day. "There's an accident up ahead, Flares are in our way". The car was laying on it's top, The police were everywhere. The couple I did not see Although the dog was still there. We passed the car I remember well. The couple, oh so very young, Who waved and smiled at me. And the dog who out the window hung.
