A BOXTOP AND A DIME
Are you old enough to remember
When there was a time
So many things a kid could get
With a boxtop and a dime.
Just eat and drink the things
That were good for you.
Then allow two weeks for handling
Before getting something new.
Drink Ovaltine as Orphan Annie said
And get the newest decoder ring.
One that fits any finger
The mailman to you will bring.
Be a Straight Shooter! Eat Ralston!
And send the top to Tom Mix.
What a problem that could be -
Which prize is best? Ralston or Kix?
Eat Wheaties, like Jack Armstrong,
And be an All American Boy.
For the dime and the boxtop
You'd get a really neat toy.
One was a cereal bowl, a pretty blue
Which had an extra feature.
Eat the Wheaties, milk and all
And see Shirley Temple's picture.
The Lone Ranger, I think it was
Who offered the neatest whip.
A strip of plastic to swing around
Or to wear around the hip.
Clubs to join; pins to wear,
How many other things I forget.
Bomb sights that really worked,
And an airplane spotter kit.
Drinking mugs and funny books,
Offers there were galore
Oh, what fun it was to see
The package at the door.
Alas, no longer is it true
That such things can be gotten.
In this modern TV world
A dime and a boxtop has been forgotten.
