My Birthday Gift

“What do you want for your birthday?”
My friend asked of me.
“I could use a new dictionary.
“The one I have is old you see.”

So a dictionary I was given.
Really two in fact.
One is a book with pages bound,
The other on a disk so compact.

Both will be of use to me
But the one on disk is unique.
It is two books in one;
Full of words I don’t usually speak.

Meaning of words I can look up
In the dictionary section.
If synonyms I should want,
Then there is the thesaurus section.

But that isn’t all
This computer disk can do.
I can find words that rhyme
With a word like ‘blue’.

With just a click or two
I can find a word like “shampoo”
That may fit the line I’m writing
Or maybe “shoe”, “skew” or “adieu”.

The dictionary with pages
Certainly won’t gather dust.
I’ll use it often I know
If my own knowledge I cannot trust.

My other dictionary lasted 30 years.
So this one will likely be my last.
I’m sure I can get by with this
Even though English changes fast.
