BARBARA

We met, Barbara and I,
In the strangest way.
It was at the Chicago airport
On a busy day.

I was looking at a window menu
Thinking about where to dine.
I sensed someone behind me.
A woman, with perfume divine.

"I'm looking for a place to eat”
I said without turning around.
“So am I" was her reply.
A dinner companion I had found!

It was pretty fancy, this place we ate.
And very romantic too.
The lights were dimmed, the candles lit.
It was just the place for two.

We talked and laughed
As two old friends would do.
We even shared from our plates
Bites of some strange ragout.

The musicians came to our table
While we were sipping wine.
I lightly touched her fingers;
She did the same to mine.

Our meal was done, the wine was gone.
The table candle was burning low.
We did not speak about it
But knew it was time to go.

We parted at the door
To go our separate ways.
There was no talk about
Seeing each other on other days.

I watched her disappear in the crowd,
This woman I knew I would miss.
When she said “Goodbye, and thank you”
She gave me a gentle kiss.
