You know I was in Alaska
Not so many weeks ago.
I didn’t see so very much -
Just a bit of it down below.
I didn’t have a romantic cruise
Like so many people do
But met with 30 men and women
To walk in the Beluga Slough.
Homer, the town where we were
Was sort of strange to me.
I had never been to one
Where moose were roaming free.
“It’s just a block away”
Is what we were usually told.
That block was about a mile
Walking in the wind and cold.
Homer has one long street.
It’s name is Pioneer.
Four thousand people is the pop.
But people come from far and near.
Forty thousand is more like it
In the summer days.
At least that is what I was told
To fish, hunt and see plays.
The spruce forests were extensive
But looking mighty sad.
A borer beetle was killing them.
It really was too bad.
Mountains were across the bay
All capped with winter snow.
One could see Augustine volcano
All set for another blow.
I may never get to return
To our largest state.
But this one trip was
Quite first rate.
