HERE'S A RITIN FRUM OLD BEAR

FOR AUGUST 1998

Here's wat tyme it is in Dallus, Texus wear I live:

This is Old Bear ritin 2 U agin and that`s a pitcher of me after we got home frum goin 2 Guadalajara in Mexico. I am wearing a new sombrero that got bought in Tlaquepaque and wat you see on my bak is wat is kalled a Mochila and I can carry kandy and all kinds of stuff in it. My man bought the mochila for me when we were at the mercado in Guadalajara. He bought some hurryaches for himself but they hurt his feet. He sez they aren't broke yet.

We shure had a gud tyme goin 2 Mexico and I culd rite a hole lot but my man sujested that I jist show U sum of our pitchers and tell U a little bit abowt the pitchers. That's a purty gud idea he had.

Here I am waitin at the airport 4 our ayrplane 2 cum. The Americun Ayrlines peples sed 2 be there 2 ours erly but my man lykes 2 be shure sew the shuttle bus kum 2 pick us up 3 ours erly.

Here is my man and me on our way to Guadalajara. It only tuk us almost 3 hours and we had sum barbecued beef 4 lunch and the driver man rote down in my log book that it was 825 nawty miles and du you know it was jist the same number of nawty miles cumin bak.

THE kustums peples didn`t cut me open lyke my man wurried abowt. Fact is, they didn`t even luk at me. Sr. Mario and Srta. Haydee frum Elderhostel met us at the airport. Srta. Haydee wus reel surprysed to C me cus nobudy told her I wus cumin and she hugged me reel tite and sed how glad she wus that I cum to the Elderhostel Spanish classes with my man. She shure is purty and Sr. Mario made us all laff reel hard sumtymes.

We stayed at the Calinda Roma hotel 4 2 weeks so we got 2 no most everyone who wurked there reel gud. Here are pitchers of Sr Alejandro, the barman; Sr Jesus, a reel gud waiter; Srta. Edna, a desk clerk; and Srta Marta. She and Sra. Gloria kept our rooms reel clean but Srta. Gloria didn't want her pitcher tuk but give my man a goodbye hug wen we were leavin..

Here's a pitcher of sum of the nice Elderhostel peples who made our trip sew much fun. "Liz" helped make things wurk gud. Mayola was my man's konservation teacher. Haydee was wat wus kalled a sight kordnatur and did a lot of peple countin wen we went places. Rosita wus my man's grammar teacher.

I didn`t go 2 all the classes cus they were purty hard. My man went 2 all the classes and he sed they were reel hard 4 him and 4 everybudy else. I lyked the class where we all played LOTERIA. That was sort of a bingo game cept there were pitchers on the board of all kinds of things and Sra. Rosita who wus the grammar teacher held up pitchers of things and said wat they were in Spanish and we had to put down a black bean if we had a pitcher jist lyke wat she showed us. I put black beans on all the pitchers but forgot to holler out reel loud LOTERIA so I didn`t win nuthin. But it shure wus fun. Here's a pitcher of us playin Loteria.

Sra. Mayola wus the other teacher cept she jist talked in Mexicun talk and my man and Mr. Patricio and Miss Mary and Mr. Bill and sum others wuld try 2 talk bak in Mexicun talk. That wus kalled konservation. Sumtymes I wuld go 2 that klass cause Sra. Mayola did things 2 make us laf a hole lot. One time she made everybudy in the klass help make Guacamole and my man chopped the onions cept he didn`t du it the way Sra. Mayola wanted it done. It sure wus gud Guacamole wen it got made. Sra. Mayola`s dawter give me sum bells 2 wear round my neck and shoes and stockings that didn`t fit very gud. It shure wus nice of her.

We did lots of other things besides klasses. One of the funnest things wus goin 2 a town named Tonala where we got 2 C peples making purty things out of sumpn kalled paper mash and I got to sit on a paper mash horse 4 a little wile. That wus fun.

Then we went to a town kalled Ajijic that wus reel old and mostly we jist walked around and Miss Millie who wus with us bought sum swizzle sticks made out of glass with little birds and animuls on them that were reel purty.

Another town we went to was named Chapala where there is a big lake and we had lunch there under the trees and my man and Miss Milly and Mr. Ken and Mrs. Ken went swimmin in a hot swimmin pool.

Tlaquepaque is a village near Guadalajara and we stayed there most a hole day and walked a hole lot and my man bot 2 belts 4 himself and we all ate lunch in a nice restaurant that had sum parrot birds lukin at us.

Another gud playce sum of us went 2 wus Parque Agua Azul where they had all kinds of things 2 luk at. We all laffed at this funny sign that give direkshuns wear 2 go 2 du things. Me and my man and Miss Mary and her momma Miss Millie tuk a taxi cab 2 the Parque but rode a city bus back. That sure wus different and it tuk us rite 2 the Mercado where we wanted 2 go. But we didn't stay in the Mercado very long cus it wus reel krowded.

There wus a nyce party up on the hotel terrace the last nite we were there and we got little presunts frum the hotel and a reel good meal and sum mariachi music men played sum Mexicun songs 4 us and there was lots of dancin. Srta. Haydee did dancin with me but my man's pitcher wusn't very gud. But here's two dancin pitchers. Sum of the class peples practiced duin a Mexicun dance sew they wuld du it reel gud at the party. Then at the party Sra. Mayola and Srta. Haydee and Sra. Rosita and another lady did sum Mexicun dances 4 us.

My man tuk me with him most every place lyke 2 the museos and on walkin trips but I didn't get 2 go to the TEATRO DEGALLADO to see the Ballet Folklorico. But he bought a tv tape sew I culd C it wen we got home. It sure is a gud show.

Well, I bet U shure R tyred of lukin at pitchers and reeding my ritin abowt now so I'll finish my ritin with sumpn reel differunt.

Miss Corinne who cum all the way frum Kaliforny wus purty gud at Mexicun talk sew she rote a poum telling abowt all of us and she made the rimin wurds all be in Spanish. Evrybudy laffed reel hard wen she red it to us cus she sed sum purty funny things. Here is her poum.

Elderhostel Guadalajara

Corinne Torrance

It was an adventure not just for turistas,
But students of Spanish and also artistas.

Each of us slept in our own domicila (o)
But we functioned together like one grande familia

There was James, who travels with el senor oso
And Patricio, who can be so very chistoso

Minna and Arnold, all the world han viajado
George and Joanne, all Ajijic han comprado

Phil and Maureen enjoyed the alberca
Mary Jo and Ken explored farther - not cerca

Ruth and also Burt were painting each dia
And Mary was practicing Spanish todavia

There was Millie the brave, who never felt mala
And Frances, with friends who live near Chapala

Connie and Bill, who ventured afuera
David and Marsha, drinking "agua" de pera

There was Corinne, with steps careful and lentos
And Bill Fears, who regaled us with marvelous cuentos

Ah, yes, were quite the wide grupo
From the one who would guess to the one who supo

Remember the night we all heard the alarma?
Then studied the soldiers with sticks for their arma.

We sampled such treats as mole and mozole
And even assembled our own guacamole

The ballet with it's rhythms and swirling colores
Tlaquepaque with shops full of bright wooden flores.

Who was facilitating our little drama?
The leaders and teachers of the Elderhostel programa.

There was Liz, who joined some for a night's concierto
With Javier, the world of Orozco's now abierto.

Mayola, unbelieveably, a proud abuela
Rosa Maria, competent with book or cazuela.

Our Guadalajaran, Mario, always amable,
And Claudia, so pleasant,most agradable.

Elodia would help us our Spanish practicar
And Terry would paint but also platicar.

With Elias and Alicia to teach la historia
We also learned vocabulary like zanahoria.

Our dear little Haydee would count "veintidos"
"I just want to remind you" - with never a tos.

To sum it all up, with excitement and calentura,
This Elderhostel provided a great aventura!

Wusn't that a gud poum? My man got a little jelus cus he kuldn't du one as gud. But he sed I kuld rite it down 4 U 2 reed cus Miss Corrine sed it wuld be okay. .
