HERE'S A RITIN FRUM

For JULY/AUGUST 2002

Hi Everybody,

This is Old Bear writing to you again and in case you realize my writing is different, Miss Elizabeth is helping me with it and her spelling is better than mine.

I wanted to tell you that My Man has had a real big experience this week. Thursday, June 6 he went in to have a procedure the doctor said he needed, but was advised to bring a tooth brush and razor because he might have to spend the night. Well they found more wrong than they thought and the doctor advised him to have open heart surgery on Friday June 7. Miss Elizabeth stayed with him until the doctor took him down for surgery and she met the Doctor and liked him a lot. Her friend, Miss Sarah came back with her and they were there during the surgery. The doctor came out and reported that all went well with his operation.

But on Saturday morning early the doctor called Miss Elizabeth to tell her that my man's heart had done funny things in the night and they had had to shock it back into its rhythm and he was put in ICU to give him special care. Sam and Lucy (that's Mies Elizabeh's son and daughter-in-law) went with Miss Elizabeth by My Man''s house to check on the mail and I came home with Miss Elizabeth so she could bring me to the hospital for a visit. My Man wasn't awake but we talked to him just the same. Sunday night Miss Nancy took Miss Elizseth and me to visit my Man but he was still sleeping.

Good news. Monday Miss Elizabeth and I went to see my man at noon and his eyes were open and he seemed glad to see us although with the breathing thing in his mouth he couldn't talk. So Miss Elizabeth and I told him all the news and then the doctor came in and told he had stabilized and hadn't had any more problems after that first night and should be able to be off the respirator by Tuesday and can be in a room.

Tuesday when Miss Elizabeth and I went to see My Man we found him able to talk because the thing in his mouth was out but his throat was very sore and he couldn't swallow yet. But we got to talk to him and Miss Elizabeth told him all his friends were keeping her busy calling and checking up on him. I told him that I liked staying at Miss Elizabeth's and he said he didn't blame me. But he didn't get to move into a room yet.

Then we went by My Man's house and the plumbers were installing the sprinkler system. They are going to look after My Man's house this week and pick up the papers.

Today, Wednesday, June 12, Miss Elizabeth and I had a unique experience with my Man. When we went to see him., he was getting ready to go down for a catscan and we got to go with him. They wouldn't let us go in with him. but he said it didn't hurt and it was something he never had had before. He was talking real good to us and also they had him up walking The nurse said he might get out of ICU tomorrow. Hope this time they mean it.

Well, today, Thursday, June 13, I really had an adventure. Miss Elizabeth and I went to see My Man and found him sitting up eating his breakfast. She told him she was going to something called Clatter-Chatter that is sort of like a Sunday School class party and he told her to take me so we could tell all the friends about it.

We told Miss Elizabeth's Sunday School class how he was getting along. The ladies all sat around and asked about My Man and visited and then they had what they called a covered dish lunch. I don't know why they called it that because everything was in plain sight. Then Miss Elizabeth Went to the summer musical with Miss Nancy and Tim and I got to ride in their car out to the Music Hall. They hadn't met me before and thought I was a handsome bear. Miss Nancy wants me to meet a girl bear she had when she was a little girl. She thought I would like her because she is very pretty and has on a bikini.

Miss Dorothy, the out going regent of the DAR had asked My Man and I to come to Her Party. Since My Man was still in the hospital, Miss Elizabeth dressed me in my tuxedo ad I went with her. I had a good time and had my picture taken with Miss Dorothy and they let me sit on the piano so I could see everybody and they could all see me. It was Flag Day, so they gave me a red, white and blue ribbon. Afterward Miss Marcy (who used to work with my man) and Miss Elizabeth went by our house and they cleaned out the refrigerator, then we went by to see My Man and they had moved him into a room. We took him a balloon that said. Get Well Soon. He was glad to see us. Well, it is Wednesday, June 19. and My Man and I are back home. He came home in a cab, and Miss Elizabeth brought me home after we went the store and bought groceries. It is good to be home, but Miss Elizabeth took good care of me.
